Donate Your Overstocked Merchandise
Overstocks are a problem with every retailer. Merchandisers make bets months in advance in hopes of what will sell and typically use markdowns to get rid of product that is not selling. However, there comes a point in any product's life cycle where the continued markdown takes away effort from the products that are selling and it costs more to spend time on the losers than it would take to simply throw the merchandise away. Worse yet, your CFO will tell you that they also have to pay taxes on merchandise that is not selling. There is a better way. Why not donate the merchandise instead?
RetailROI has two programs for retailers who wish to donate their overstocked materials and receive a tax credit. The program that works best depends on the strategy of you as a retailer. Click the headline for each to learn more.
- Donated Merchandise that can be resold - This is merchandise that is older and the retailer is not concerned whether the merchandise is resold by a charity store which looks to raise money from the sales for their programs.
- Donated Merchandise that must be donated to charity (not resold) - This is merchandise where the retailer absolutely cannot have the merchandise resold as they are trying to protect the brand. However, rather than destroying the merchandise they would be willing to donate the product to be used by charities that serve vulnerable children or women at risk. In this case, the merchandise would be physically used by the beneficiaries of that charity.
