From Downpours to Brighter Futures

"A roof over your head" is often shorthand for having the basics in life. In Liberia, that shelter was crumbling overhead.

Lifesong for Orphans helps orphans find families and build lives of purpose by adapting its approach to each community it serves. In South Korea, that means mentoring young adults aging out of orphanages. In Ukraine, it means training program graduates to run farms and greenhouses that help fund the ministry itself, a model that shifted to refugee and trauma care in Poland once war broke out. Lifesong meets each community where the need is greatest.

In Liberia, the greatest need was orphan care and education. Lifesong built a complex to be home for 80 children (40 girls and 40 boys) in Marshall, 45 minutes outside Monrovia. Jobs are scarce here, and most parents never finished middle school, so they also built a school serving nearly 600 children from the surrounding community.  A vocational college teaches trades like construction, electrical work, and cosmetology: skills that open doors to a future when university is out of reach.

Liberia's rainy season runs nearly six months, with storms severe enough to send floodwater climbing the stairs of the girls’ dormitory at the Lifesong complex. In that climate, a failing roof isn’t an inconvenience: it’s wet beds, ruined belongings, and children falling sick from the cold and damp, night after night.

Your support through RetailROI funded the two things this community needed most: a repaired roof for the girls’ dormitory, and a dining pavilion where children and staff could finally gather as one.

A community project provides breakfast and lunch for everyone and dinner for the children and staff in the dorms. Before the pavilion, a handful of picnic tables served hundreds of children. Most ate sitting on the ground or on tree stumps, with no table to gather around as a family, no daily moment for staff to ask how a child’s day went. Your gift built a walled dining pavilion with real tables, built to double as a hall for graduations, school events, and other celebrations.

The impact of your support is already visible. The girls’ dormitory stays dry and secure through the heaviest storms. And the dining hall does more than provide shelter at mealtime. It tells every child who sits down: you matter enough to have a seat. As one Lifesong staff member put it, giving a child a roof and a place at the table meets more than a physical need; it tells them they are valued, seen, and worth investing in.
